Nvidia to invest $500b in US AI infrastructure by 2029

Nvidia plans to invest up to US$500 billion in AI infrastructure in the US over the next four years.

The initiative includes partnerships with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC), Foxconn, and Wistron.

TSMC has already begun producing Nvidia’s Blackwell AI chips at its factory in Phoenix, Arizona. Foxconn and Wistron are expected to start operations of supercomputer manufacturing plants in Texas within 12 to 15 months.

This move aligns with Nvidia and other tech companies’ commitment to shifting manufacturing to the US, in response to local production-supporting policies.

CEO Jensen Huang emphasized that US manufacturing will help meet rising AI demand and strengthen supply chains.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Nvidia’s evolution from gaming startup to AI infrastructure provider represents one of tech’s most dramatic transformations

Nvidia’s massive $500 billion US manufacturing commitment reflects the culmination of a 30-year strategic evolution that fundamentally transformed the company’s business model.

Founded in 1993 primarily for gaming graphics, Nvidia’s pivotal shift began in 2012 when its GPUs powered AlexNet, a breakthrough neural network that catalyzed the modern AI revolution 1.

By 2017, CEO Jensen Huang was already predicting that “AI is going to eat software,” positioning the company ahead of this technological wave while establishing dominance in AI training chips with approximately 90% market share 2.

This strategic pivot has fundamentally altered Nvidia’s business focus, moving from making primarily gaming-focused GPUs to becoming the backbone of global AI infrastructure, with over 40,000 companies now utilizing Nvidia AI solutions 1.

The company’s partnerships with manufacturers like Foxconn and Wistron reflect its earlier 2017 HGX Partner Program that standardized hyperscale AI server designs, demonstrating Nvidia’s consistent strategy of creating hardware ecosystems 3.

2️⃣ The economics of AI infrastructure represent a new manufacturing paradigm that’s reshaping America’s industrial landscape

Nvidia’s $500 billion investment announcement matches Apple’s similar commitment, signaling an unprecedented scale of technology manufacturing investment returning to American shores.

This investment aligns with industry forecasts showing AI chips alone exceeding $150 billion in value by 2025, representing a significant portion of the projected $697 billion global semiconductor market 4.
