Nvidia teams up with Intel, MediaTek on laptop SoCs
Nvidia is set to release new chip products for laptops this year, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal (WSJ).
The company plans to collaborate with US-based Intel and Taiwan’s MediaTek to develop system-on-chip (SoC) solutions for laptops.
These chips are expected to be used in devices from Dell and Lenovo. The SoC integrates CPU, GPU, and AI processing into a single chip, with Nvidia handling GPU and AI components, while Intel and MediaTek focus on the CPU.

Nvidia is pursuing two distinct chip strategies, not one
- Two separate efforts are often blended together, which muddies what is happening. One is work with MediaTek on Arm-based processors (Arm is a CPU design used widely in phones and increasingly in laptops). The other is work with Intel on x86-based chips (x86 is the dominant PC processor architecture) 1, 2.
- The MediaTek effort covers Nvidia’s N1 and N1X Arm-based system-on-chip (SoC) laptop designs (a single chip that combines CPU, GPU, and AI processing). CEO Jensen Huang confirmed these chips target AI PCs and are being built with MediaTek, with Intel and AMD as the main PC rivals 3.
- The Intel work is separate. It aims to build x86 SoCs that include Nvidia RTX GPU chiplets (small modular pieces of a processor package). It also includes a planned $5 billion Nvidia investment in Intel’s common stock, subject to regulatory approvals and other closing conditions 2.
Nvidia’s entry adds to Windows PC ecosystem fragmentation
- Intel and AMD still lead Windows laptops with x86 processors. Arm-based Windows laptops now compete too, with Qualcomm Snapdragon as the clearest example 4.
- Nvidia’s push joins Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X chips in moving Windows toward more than one processor architecture. This sits alongside Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC requirement for a neural processing unit (NPU) above 40 trillion operations per second (TOPS) 5.
- Some coverage puts Nvidia’s Arm PC chips at roughly 180–200 AI TOPS in certain configurations, though timing and supply scale vary across sources. On paper, they would go up against Apple’s M-series and Qualcomm’s SoCs on AI speed, power use, and standard CPU performance 1.
