Nvidia shares drop 3% after China bans its AI chips
Nvidia shares dropped 3% on September 18 after reports that China has banned its AI chips, including the RTX Pro 6000D, from sale to major local tech firms.
The ban follows ongoing US export restrictions and rising competition between China and the US in AI technology.
Nvidia, based in Santa Clara, had previously removed China sales from its Q3 outlook after earlier resistance to the H20 chip, another product made to meet US export rules.
Testing and verification work on the RTX Pro 6000D in China has stopped, according to sources cited by the Financial Times.
CEO Jensen Huang said he was disappointed by the situation and pointed to broader geopolitical issues between the two countries.
Chinese regulators’ actions align with Beijing’s growing confidence in domestic AI processors, which are seen as comparable to Nvidia’s downgraded chips allowed in China, the FT reported.
