Nvidia sees strong Chinese demand for H200 chip

Nvidia said it is seeing strong demand in China for its H200 chip, which is currently awaiting US government approval for export.

The company told analysts at CES in Las Vegas that it has applied for export licenses, but US authorities are still reviewing the request.

Nvidia said it can meet Chinese demand for the H200 without affecting supply for customers in other regions.

Chinese purchases would also depend on approval from Beijing, which previously discouraged use of Nvidia’s earlier H20 chip in government agencies and companies.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

H200 exports face BIS licenses under U.S. chip thresholds

  • BIS will vet Nvidia’s H200 against thresholds for total processing performance (TPP, a composite measure of compute capability) and interconnect bandwidth (chip-to-chip communication speed), which earlier blocked A100 and H100 shipments to China 1.
  • Uncertainty persists despite Donald Trump saying he would permit H200 sales to certain “approved customers” in China, as Democratic lawmakers pressed for licensing terms and military-use reviews by January 12 2.
  • Enforcement has swung over time. The administration cleared Nvidia’s H20 and AMD’s MI308 with a reported 15% fee 3, yet it suspended the 50% Affiliates Rule that covered entities half-owned by a listed firm on the U.S. Entity List 4.
  • China’s review adds another hurdle, since regulators called Nvidia’s H20 unsafe and told Alibaba and ByteDance to cancel orders 5.

Cloud builders in China need fallback plans

  • License delays or denials would push demand to domestic accelerators such as Huawei Ascend 910C, Cambricon MLU 590, and Baidu Kunlun P800, which reach roughly Nvidia A100 territory 5.
  • Backers should weigh that sending 3 million H200s could give China computing power that tops its domestic output until 2028-2029, which would support competitive AI data centers 6.
  • Software suppliers focused on inference can tune for parts cleared in China, including Alibaba’s PPU and Cambricon’s MLU series, with FP8 support such as on the MLU 590 seeing wider use 5.
  • Both U.S. exporters and Chinese buyers must secure BIS licenses plus Chinese approvals, which can stretch timelines 7.
