Nvidia, Microsoft, Amazon reportedly may invest up to $60b in OpenAI
Nvidia, Microsoft, and Amazon are reportedly in discussions to invest up to US$60 billion in OpenAI, according to The Information.
Nvidia, which already invests in OpenAI and supplies chips for its AI models, is said to be considering an investment of up to US$30 billion.
Microsoft, a long-term partner, is in talks to invest less than US$10 billion, while Amazon, a new potential investor, may commit more than US$10 billion, possibly exceeding US$20 billion.
The report indicates that OpenAI is close to receiving term sheets or investment commitments from these firms.
Neither Nvidia, Amazon, Microsoft, nor OpenAI responded to requests for comment outside business hours.
The report also suggests Amazon’s investment could be linked to negotiations over cloud services and product sales agreements.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
What the $60 billion could really pay for
- The makeup of the proposed $60 billion should be verified.
- Past large deals, including the restructured $250 billion agreement with Microsoft, were largely treated as commitments for cloud compute services 1. The Amazon plan has been tied to cloud server rentals as well.
- The split between new equity and prepaid compute should be made clear. OpenAI is facing higher costs to train and run its AI models, while competition from Google is picking up.
- The effect on OpenAI’s corporate structure should be reviewed, including the ownership stakes held by its controlling non-profit foundation and Microsoft 2.
Amazon could become another way to reach enterprise buyers
- For cloud and enterprise software providers, Amazon’s interest sends a clear market signal.
- A reported tie to a commercial agreement for OpenAI to sell its products suggests a broader enterprise route. It could run through Amazon Web Services (AWS), Amazon’s cloud computing business, plus its enterprise sales teams.
- That path could give systems integrators (consulting firms that implement and connect business software) and software vendors more room to serve growing enterprise demand.
- Teams that start building skills in custom API integrations or managing ChatGPT Enterprise deployments may win early customers before the channel gets crowded.
