Nvidia joins India Deep Tech Alliance to mentor startups

Nvidia has joined the India Deep Tech Alliance (IDTA) as a founding member, aiming to train and mentor deep tech startups in India.

The US chipmaker will offer technical talks and training through its Nvidia Deep Learning Institute, but has not disclosed any financial investment, timeline, or training targets.

IDTA is a group of private equity and venture capital (VC) investors that has pledged US$2 billion for deep tech investments in sectors including semiconductors, AI, biotech, and robotics.

The Indian government has announced over US$1.1 billion for its AI Mission and a separate US$11.2 billion fund to support research, development, and innovation in deep tech.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India will host the AI Impact Summit in February 2025, with expected participation from global business and policy leaders.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Nvidia’s pledge lacks specifics to gauge impact

  • Nvidia joined IDTA as a founding member yet the announcement sets no budget or timeline or training target for the Deep Learning Institute.
  • Eight VC firms in IDTA pledged over $1 billion across 5-10 years for India-domiciled deep tech startups 1.
  • No detail on Nvidia’s spending or training capacity leaves it unclear if this goes beyond developer relations or just repackages efforts.
  • The government’s ₹10,000 crore IndiaAI Mission has procured 34,333 GPUs, above its 10,000 target, and GPU prices run as low as ₹4 per hour 2. That leaves unclear what extra Nvidia hardware adds beyond IndiaAI compute.

Vendors can gain as India builds AI infrastructure

  • IndiaAI’s third tender adds 3,850 GPUs, widening suppliers to include Google’s Trillium TPUs and Amazon Web Services (AWS)-backed integrator Locuz 2, opening bids for non-IDTA vendors on government compute.
  • Celesta Capital partner Sriram Viswanathan said the government plans to invest with VCs, offer low-cost loans, and capitalize second-level fund managers 3. That lifts demand for providers who can help startups scale AI workloads.
  • Vendors delivering compliance, data center management, or training under IndiaAI Mission can prepare for Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) procurement 2. Of 506 foundation model proposals (large, general-purpose AI models), 43 focus on large language models 2.
  • The ₹1 trillion Research, Development, and Innovation scheme (RDI) targets semiconductors plus quantum computing plus biotech 1. That opens work in specialized compute, cooling systems, or lab equipment for suppliers in capital-intensive sectors.
