Nvidia, IREN plan 5-gigawatt AI build

Australian data center operator IREN said on May 7 that it will partner with Nvidia to deploy up to 5 gigawatts of the chipmaker’s AI infrastructure designs across its facilities worldwide.

Its shares rose 13% in extended trading.

IREN will also give Nvidia a five-year right to buy up to 30 million ordinary shares at US$70 each, a structure that could let Nvidia invest as much as US$2.1 billion.

The deal follows similar multibillion-dollar agreements Nvidia has signed with Coherent, Lumentum, and Corning.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

IREN has shifted from Bitcoin mining to AI infrastructure

  • IREN started in Bitcoin mining and is now putting cash flow into AI cloud services 1.
  • The company says it runs 810 megawatts (MW) of data center capacity, with 2.1 gigawatts (GW) under construction plus 1 GW in development 1.
  • Before the Nvidia deal, IREN had added 1.6 GW of grid-connected property in Oklahoma. That lifted its potential North American data center capacity to 4.5 GW 2.
  • Its model is vertically integrated, which means it owns the land plus purpose-built facilities. IREN says its sites run on 100% renewable energy, either from clean power sources or through renewable energy certificates (RECs) 3.

Nvidia is backing the data centers its chips need

  • In the AI expansion, the constraint is moving beyond chip supply to specialized data centers with enough power plus cooling for advanced systems 4.
  • Nvidia’s proposed investment gives it a five-year right to buy up to 30 million IREN ordinary shares at US$70 each, or as much as US$2.1 billion.
  • Support for IREN could bring more capacity online for Nvidia graphics processing units (GPUs), including liquid-cooled setups built for high-density systems 5.
  • The deal may lower risk around future sales, speed uptake of newer products, and deepen the hardware plus infrastructure base behind Nvidia’s growth 5.
