Nvidia invests in AI startup SSI at $32b valuation

Nvidia said on July 27 that it is investing in Safe Superintelligence (SSI), an AI startup founded in 2024 by former OpenAI chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, and will give the company access to its Vera Rubin platform.

The companies said the partnership will increase SSI’s computing capacity by an order of magnitude.

SSI describes itself as a lab with “one goal and one product: a safe superintelligence,” built around advancing safety and capabilities together rather than near-term commercial products.

Nvidia said Vera Rubin was ramping into full production and was designed to deliver more tokens per watt and a lower cost per token than Blackwell, making it a hardware upgrade for SSI.

The deal gives SSI another computing partnership after Google Cloud said in April that the startup would use its tensor processing unit, or TPU, chips. Google Cloud was SSI’s primary computing provider.

SSI has raised more than US$3 billion at a US$32 billion valuation from investors including Andreessen Horowitz, DST Global, Greenoaks, and Sequoia Capital, the companies said.
