Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs, Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison, Nvidia, and Universitas Gadjah Mada launched the UGM Indosat Nvidia AI Technology Center in Yogyakarta on August 13 to support applied AI research and digital talent development.

The center is part of the national AI Center of Excellence, led by the ministry under Indonesia’s Golden 2045 Vision as a sovereign AI and skills-building program.

Indosat said the center uses Nvidia’s full-stack AI platform and GPU Merdeka.

Lintasarta, an Indonesian information and communications technology services provider, described GPU Merdeka as a domestically hosted sovereign AI cloud that provides access to Nvidia graphics processing units, AI software, and related infrastructure.

The partners said the broader program built on earlier sovereign AI initiatives in Indonesia, including an AI factory using Nvidia infrastructure.

Initial projects include eNose-TB for tuberculosis screening, SmartAgri for tropical agriculture, and Tech4Disaster for disaster prediction, preparedness, and response.

Separately, a government-led forum is developing trustworthy AI frameworks for Indonesia.
