Nvidia, Google back $863m funding for Commonwealth Fusion
Commonwealth Fusion Systems has secured US$863 million in funding from investors including Nvidia, Khosla Ventures, and Google to support its fusion energy projects.
The Massachusetts-based company is developing a demonstration system, which it says is about 65% complete, and aims to achieve a key technical milestone by 2027.
Commonwealth is working on a 400-megawatt fusion power plant in Virginia, targeting growing energy demand in the area.
Google has agreed to purchase half of the plant’s future output.
With this round, Commonwealth has raised a total of about US$3 billion, which the company says represents one-third of global fusion industry investment to date.
