Nvidia eyes up to $3b in SB Energy for OpenAI data center

Nvidia is reportedly in talks to invest up to US$3 billion in SB Energy, a SoftBank Group subsidiary that develops power and data center projects, for a planned OpenAI data center in Ohio.

Discussions also involve about US$100 billion in credit support.

Nvidia has discussed investing half when the Ohio project is signed and the rest as part of SB Energy’s planned initial public offering, which could come as soon as next month and raise at least US$5 billion.

SB Energy says it develops AI infrastructure across power and data centers and is building several multi-gigawatt data center campuses in the US.

In Ohio, the US Department of Energy said SB Energy recently announced plans to build the world’s largest AI data center at the Portsmouth Site in Piketon.

The talks would deepen Nvidia’s push into AI infrastructure finance after the company said it would help mobilize US$500 billion in third-party capital for AI compute projects.

Ohio’s consumer counsel says a hyperscale data center can use as much electricity as 100,000 homes.
