Nvidia eyes about $20b bond sale

Nvidia aims to raise about US$20 billion through a bond offering, according to people familiar with the matter, after disclosing the plan in a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

The chipmaker said the proceeds would go to general corporate purposes, including repaying and refinancing existing debt.

Nvidia had about US$7.5 billion in long-term debt and US$1 billion in short-term debt.

Nvidia last raised US$5 billion in debt in 2021. This would be its first bond sale since the AI surge that followed OpenAI’s ChatGPT launch in late 2022.

Moody’s recently upgraded Nvidia’s senior unsecured rating to Aa1 and kept a positive outlook, citing the company’s position in AI infrastructure and its liquidity.

The planned sale would also fit a broader pattern of borrowing by AI-linked tech companies.

A JP Morgan Asset Management note highlighted Meta’s roughly US$30 billion bond sale, as well as new debt issuance from Amazon and others.
