Nvidia execs reportedly sell $1b in stock

Executives at Nvidia reportedly have sold over US$1 billion in company stock over the past year.

About US$500 million of those sales occurred in the last month as Nvidia’s stock hit record highs.

CEO Jensen Huang, with a net worth of US$138 billion, recently sold shares worth around US$15 million.

This was part of a prearranged plan announced in March, which allows for up to 6 million shares to be sold by year-end, totaling over US$900 million.

Nvidia’s stock has jumped more than 17% in 2025 and 44% over the past three months, despite concerns about AI chip export restrictions.

The company briefly reclaimed the title of the world’s most valuable company, overtaking Microsoft and Apple.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Planned insider selling often follows different rules than reactive market moves

Nvidia’s billion-dollar insider sales are largely executed through SEC Rule 10b5-1 plans, which executives establish in advance to avoid accusations of trading on non-public information 1.

These predetermined selling schedules, like Jensen Huang’s $900 million plan announced in March, allow executives to diversify their personal holdings while maintaining compliance with securities regulations.

Research shows that insider selling doesn’t necessarily indicate lack of confidence, unlike insider buying, which tends to be a stronger market signal 1.

Academic studies from Purdue University indicate that while insider trading can influence stock prices, the impact varies significantly based on transaction context and market conditions 2.

For Nvidia specifically, the company’s 17% stock price increase this year despite massive insider selling demonstrates how planned diversification by executives can occur simultaneously with strong market performance.

Historical data shows that insider selling at tech companies experiencing rapid valuation growth is common practice for wealth management reasons, rather than a reliable indicator of company trajectory.

2️⃣ Nvidia’s valuation reflects the projected $697 billion semiconductor market in 2025
