Nvidia denies deal rumor lifting Dell, HP shares

Dell and HP shares rose in New York after tech website SemiAccurate said Nvidia had spent more than a year negotiating to buy a large company in talks it said could reshape the PC market.

“The media report is false; Nvidia is not engaged in discussions to acquire any PC maker,” a company spokesperson told Bloomberg.

Dell was up 6.3% at US$188.95 by late morning, while HP rose 2.3% to US$18.68 after both stocks climbed more earlier in the session.

Gartner said HP held 19% of global PC shipments in Q1, behind Lenovo at nearly 27%, while Dell had about 17%, making both among the world’s largest PC vendors.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Nvidia denial cools takeover talk

  • The rumor pushed Dell and HP shares higher, then Nvidia said it was false 1.
  • After the statement, Dell and HP slipped in after-hours trading and gave back part of the earlier rise 1.
  • Separate reports say Nvidia is building an Arm-based chip for PCs called N1X, which kept the chatter going 2.
  • Buying a PC maker could help Nvidia launch the chip with tighter control of hardware and software, similar to Apple’s approach with Macs 2.

A big Nvidia purchase could draw regulators worldwide

  • A large deal would likely draw US antitrust attention, since lawmakers already question Nvidia’s unusual deal structures 3.
  • Senators have raised alarms about a US$20 billion licensing and hiring deal with AI chip startup Groq. They say it could grow Nvidia’s market power while dodging formal antitrust review 4.
  • Outside the US, politics could slow or block approval, especially in China 5.
  • Chinese state media said regulators are checking whether Nvidia’s 2020 purchase of Mellanox, a networking technology company, met China’s antimonopoly rules 5. Analysts see Beijing gathering bargaining chips for later US-China trade talks 5.
