Nvidia denies China H20 chip backdoor feature claims
Nvidia has denied allegations that its H20 chips contain backdoor features after being questioned by China’s cyberspace regulator over security concerns.
The Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) summoned Nvidia representatives to discuss potential risks related to tracking and remote control functions in the H20 chips, which are designed for the Chinese market.
Nvidia said that its chips do not have backdoors that would allow remote access or control.
The CAC did not disclose the source or evidence for its concerns.
Nvidia’s shares fell 0.8% in New York following the news.
This development comes as Nvidia attempts to navigate regulatory pressures from both the US and China amid ongoing tensions over technology and AI.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Security investigations follow predictable cycles in US-China tech relations
China’s inquiry into Nvidia’s H20 chips reflects a decade-long pattern of mutual technology mistrust between Washington and Beijing.
The US has conducted similar investigations into Chinese companies, with Congress examining Huawei for potential cyber espionage risks as early as 2012, citing concerns about the company’s ties to China’s military 1.
China has responded with its own security reviews, banning Micron Technology products from key infrastructure operators in May 2023 after the company failed a national security review [Original article].
This dynamic intensified after Edward Snowden’s 2013 revelations about US global surveillance practices, which accelerated China’s push to replace imported technologies in critical infrastructure [Original article].
The pattern illustrates how both nations use security investigations as tools in broader strategic competition, creating ongoing operational uncertainty for multinational technology companies.
2️⃣ Chinese firms accelerate domestic alternatives amid foreign tech scrutiny
The timing of China’s Nvidia investigation coincides with major Chinese companies forming alliances to build domestic semiconductor capabilities, signaling a strategic shift toward tech self-reliance.
