Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has emphasized the importance of “sovereign AI,” calling for nations to develop and manage their own AI infrastructure.

During a recent tour of European capitals, Huang announced several partnerships and highlighted the need for Europe to enhance its AI capabilities.

In Paris, Huang expressed Nvidia’s commitment to investing billions in Europe. He urged the region to expedite its AI development.

British prime minister Keir Starmer announced £1 billion (US$1.35 billion) in funding for improved computing capabilities. Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron described AI development as a “fight for sovereignty” at the VivaTech conference.

In Germany, Nvidia disclosed plans to build an AI cloud platform in partnership with Deutsche Telekom. This prompted German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to underline the importance of digital sovereignty.

Currently, Europe’s AI landscape is largely influenced by US cloud providers, including Microsoft, Amazon, and Google. Only a few local competitors, such as the French startup Mistral, exist.
