Nvidia CEO urges Japan to boost power for AI growth

Huang’s comments about Japan needing “new infrastructure” highlight a critical challenge for the resource-poor nation competing in AI development.

The 2011 Fukushima disaster forced Japan to shut down most of its nuclear fleet, resulting in increased fossil fuel imports and soaring energy costs 1.

As a country with no domestic energy resources and the world’s largest net oil importer, Japan faces distinct vulnerabilities in powering data centers 1.

This reality is particularly concerning as AI data centers consume enormous amounts of electricity—a typical facility uses as much power as 100,000 homes 2.

Japan’s situation highlights the infrastructure challenges facing nations with limited energy resources, as they must secure reliable power while competing in the AI race.

2️⃣ AI’s surging energy appetite is reshaping global energy trade

Huang’s push for Japan to increase power generation reflects a broader trend. Data center electricity demand is projected to more than double by 2030, potentially matching Japan’s entire current electricity consumption 3.

The global AI infrastructure already consumed approximately 415 TWh of electricity in 2024, accounting for 1.5% of global electricity use, and this figure is rising rapidly 2.

This explains why Japan is considering investing in the $40+ billion Alaska LNG project—a move that Ishiba has framed as part of trade negotiations with the US 4.
