Nvidia buys Corning stake tied to AI data center push
Nvidia has bought US$500 million in rights to Corning shares, as the companies expand US fiber-optic supply for AI data centers.
Corning, a US maker of fiber-optic cable and specialty glass, granted Nvidia rights to up to 3 million shares and options to buy up to 15 million more at US$180 a share.
Corning said it will raise US fiber production capacity by more than 50%.
It also plans to build three complexes in North Carolina and Texas, which it estimates will create more than 3,000 jobs.
Earlier in 2026, Nvidia also invested US$4 billion in optics suppliers Lumentum and Coherent.
Corning shares rose as much as 21% to a record US$195.81 in New York, while Nvidia shares were up 2%.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
The deal targets data traffic limits in AI data centers
- As AI data centers grow to thousands of graphics processing units (GPUs), copper cables can run into limits over longer distances. Fiber-based optical links can ease those data traffic jams.
- Optical fiber carries information with photons rather than electrons.
- Corning plans to raise U.S. manufacturing capacity for optical connectivity solutions by ten times and lift U.S. fiber production by more than 50% 1.
- In the materials provided here, the companies do not frame the effort as co-packaged optics, which places optical components closer to chips to speed data transfer. They do say AI workloads need much more optical fiber, connectivity, and photonics. Photonics are the technologies used to generate and transmit light-based signals for fast data movement at scale 1.
Nvidia has tied capital to Corning’s buildout
- Nvidia bought US$500 million in warrants from Corning. The package includes a pre-funded warrant for up to 3 million shares at US$0.0001 each and a traditional warrant for up to 15 million shares at US$180 each 2.
- The plan centers on more U.S. production of optical connectivity for next-generation AI infrastructure. Corning expects to open three advanced manufacturing facilities in North Carolina and Texas and create more than 3,000 jobs 1.
- The provided sources do not connect this agreement to Nvidia’s future Rubin platform.
- Both companies present the partnership as a way to strengthen U.S. manufacturing and supply chains around AI 1.
