Nvidia, Broadcom test Intel’s 18A chip process, sources say

Nvidia and Broadcom are testing Intel’s 18A chipmaking process to evaluate its manufacturing capabilities, according to sources familiar with the matter.

The results could determine whether they pursue major contracts with Intel, which is crucial for Intel’s struggling foundry business.

The 18A process targets high-end chips like those used in AI and competes with TSMC. Current tests focus on component compatibility rather than full chip designs.

The timeline for potential contracts remains unclear.

Intel has delayed the 18A process for external clients to mid-2026 due to qualification issues with essential intellectual property.

Broadcom previously faced technical problems with Intel’s foundry, and AMD is also exploring the process but has not confirmed testing.

Despite delays, Intel aims to ramp up production in late 2025 and secure customer designs this year, though major foundry revenue growth is not expected until 2027.

Intel’s foundry business is a key part of its recovery strategy but faces major hurdles. Revenue in this segment dropped 60% last year, reflecting its struggle to compete in the semiconductor market.
