Nvidia-backed cloud firm eyes $5b valuation in new funding talks
Lambda, a cloud infrastructure firm based in California and backed by Nvidia, is in talks with investors for a funding round that could value the company between US$4 billion and US$5 billion, according to sources.
The company may go public as early as the end of 2025 and has started early discussions with bankers about its IPO.
Lambda reportedly aims to raise several hundred million dollars in the new round.
This comes after it raised US$480 million in February at a US$2.5 billion valuation, led by Andra Capital and SGW, with participation from investors including OpenAI co-founder Andrej Karpathy, ARK Invest, and Nvidia.
The company operates over 1 million Nvidia GPUs across data centers in several US cities and has raised more than US$860 million to date, according to its website.
Discussions about the funding and IPO are ongoing and may change.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Lambda’s valuation surge reflects broader AI infrastructure investment boom
Lambda’s rapid valuation increase from $2.5 billion to potentially $5 billion within six months aligns with the surge in AI startup funding across the market.
From Q1 2023 to Q1 2025, total AI startup investments reached $306.5 billion, with $230 billion allocated specifically to U.S. firms1. This represents a significant shift in venture capital priorities, with AI and machine learning companies accounting for nearly 48% of total U.S. venture capital investments during this period2.
Nvidia’s own investment activity demonstrates this trend, participating in 49 funding rounds for AI startups in 2024, up from 34 in 20231. The chip giant’s backing of Lambda fits into this pattern of strategic investments designed to expand the AI ecosystem.
The timing of Lambda’s fundraising coincides with major tech companies budgeting approximately $325 billion for AI investments, creating substantial demand for the cloud infrastructure services that Lambda provides3.
2️⃣ GPU infrastructure scale becomes key competitive differentiator in cloud market
Lambda’s claim of operating over 1 million Nvidia GPUs across multiple data centers represents the type of massive capital expenditure that determines competitiveness in cloud infrastructure.
Analysis of cloud market dynamics shows that capital expenditure serves as a leading indicator of competitiveness, with significant investments required to build the data centers and infrastructure necessary to compete with market leaders4.
