Nvidia-backed AI startup Cohere plans EU expansion deal
Canadian AI lab Cohere said on April 24 it plans to acquire German AI firm Aleph Alpha to expand in Europe.
Aleph Alpha backer Schwarz Group plans to invest US$600 million in Cohere’s series E round.
The round is expected to close in 2026, and the acquisition is still subject to regulatory approval, with financial terms undisclosed.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
A merger born from a shared tough spot in the market
- Aleph Alpha was once cast as Germany’s rival to OpenAI. It raised more than US$500 million from industrial groups and financial backers, including Bosch and SAP, a German business software company, in late 2023 1.
- Since then, the company has stepped back from building large language models and turned to specialized AI tools for businesses after missing its 2023 revenue targets 2, 3.
- Cohere has long aimed at business customers. It centers on secure and “sovereign” AI, AI systems designed to keep data and control within a country or organization, for enterprises and governments 4, 5.
- The deal gives Cohere a larger base in Europe, along with Aleph Alpha’s ties and possible access to public-sector customers in a tightly regulated market 3.
A new path for taking on AI giants
- The acquisition could speed up dealmaking in the “sovereign AI” market as mid-sized AI firms seek scale for business and government work 3.
- It would form a non-US AI company with signs the German government could become a customer, aimed at public-sector groups with sovereignty requirements 6, 3.
- This approach offers another route in the costly race to build the biggest models, with local deployments and specialized applications first, then a merger to add scale 2, 3.
- A North American AI company buying a European firm with deep industrial ties could become a model for cross-border mergers and acquisitions (M&A), as Aleph Alpha’s relationship with shareholder Schwarz Group, the German retail group that owns Lidl, suggests 1, 3.
