NUS team unveils AI-powered headset for impaired users

A team from the National University of Singapore (NUS) has developed AiSee, an AI-powered headset designed to assist visually impaired users with daily activities, including commuting and shopping.

The device, which connects via Wi-Fi, features a camera, speakers, and artificial intelligence based on large language models like GPT, to provide real-time information through voice prompts.

NUS has launched a spin-off company to commercialize AiSee, priced at US$299, with plans to seek subsidies from the national disability agency SG Enable.

The device can identify bus stops, provide estimated arrival times, and alert users when their bus or ride is approaching.

It also helps users read labels, identify colors, sizes, and prices, and describe items for shopping.

The team is exploring additional applications, including guided tours at locations like the Botanic Gardens.

The device aims to enhance independence for visually impaired individuals and has potential uses for sighted users as well.
