NUS School of Computing, OpenAI partner to develop AI graduates

The National University of Singapore’s School of Computing is collaborating with OpenAI to add Codex and other OpenAI tools from its enterprise platform to its curriculum for hands-on AI development experience.

NUS Computing said the tools will be provided in secure educational environments and progressively incorporated into over 30 undergraduate courses covering software engineering, systems, and capstone projects.

OpenAI describes Codex as an agentic coding tool powered by the GPT5.4 frontier model that can generate code and help identify bugs.

NUS said students will take part in workshops, training sessions, hackathons, and build days organised with OpenAI and other industry partners.

The collaboration aims to give graduates practical experience with AI-assisted development and reinforce core computing fundamentals.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

University AI partnerships focus on security and oversight, not feature lists

  • The NUS collaboration fits a wider push in higher education, with other institutions piloting or rolling out OpenAI’s enterprise tools 12.
  • Schools moved in this direction after serious security and privacy risks surfaced across campuses worldwide 3.
  • Many institutions limit or ban consumer AI tools for university data, since confidential research or personal information could leak 3.
  • Enterprise platforms, including the OpenAI enterprise platform NUS is using, can add protections like single sign-on (a login method that lets users access multiple systems with one set of credentials) plus a commitment that institutional data will not be used to train models, which helps broader rollout 1.

AI tools keep core skills in focus as software development changes

  • The partnership reshapes what schools treat as engineering and software development skill.
  • AI-assisted coding tools like OpenAI Codex are becoming common at work, so NUS is adding them to over 30 undergraduate courses while reinforcing computing basics like algorithms and systems thinking.
  • Research evaluating OpenAI o1-preview finds above-human performance in some areas, including systems thinking and scientific reasoning, and it also flags limits in others, including abstract reasoning, which keeps human oversight necessary 4.
  • This approach builds a pipeline of “AI-native developers” who practice in real settings such as workshops, training sessions, hackathons, build days, and industry-linked capstone projects, then spend more time on system design plus problem-solving 5.
