NTT Data says AI use expands across Indian enterprises

NTT Data, a Tokyo-based technology firm, said it is seeing increased adoption of AI among Indian enterprises as companies move beyond pilot projects to broader implementations.

The company aims to make half of its solutions AI-powered within three years and is training staff accordingly.

NTT Data executives said Indian businesses are expanding AI use in areas such as customer service, legal, and HR, citing improved efficiency and customer experience as key drivers.

The company reported strong uptake of AI in banking, financial services, insurance, and life sciences.

NTT Data has also developed a tool to assess AI maturity for enterprises and is working to integrate AI into its own operations.

Executives noted that a robust data strategy is critical for realizing returns on AI investments.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Hard data on AI production scale remains elusive despite claimed momentum

  • NTT Data says Indian enterprises are moving past pilots. An independent index puts the 2024 AI maturity score at 2.47 on a 4-point scale, which sits at the “Enthusiast” stage (an early-adoption tier) rather than full production 1.
  • Banking, financial services, insurance, and life sciences lack third-party metrics on ROI, deployment scale, or spending commitments. Those numbers separate real change from vendor optimism.
  • Only 10% of engineering and R&D firms used Generative AI (GenAI) in 2024. That share is expected to reach 25% by end-2025, which puts mainstream adoption 12 to 18 months out 2.

Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) compliance timelines set a short window for data governance sellers

  • Indian enterprises are expanding AI that uses personal data. DPDP Rules 2025 roll out in phases. Foundational provisions took effect in November 2025. Consent manager obligations (for intermediaries that handle user consents) start in November 2026. Full operational compliance, including data retention and breach reporting, becomes mandatory in May 2027 3.
  • Sellers in regulated Banking, Financial Services, Insurance (BFSI) have an 18-month window to build DPDP-compliant pipelines and encryption tools. Consent systems need to be ready before rivals pile in.
  • Firms that process unstructured information face pressure. DPDP mandates logging and keeping personal data for at least one year. That drives demand for tools to classify, mask, and manage these datasets at scale 4.
