North Korea suspected in S Korea’s Upbit crypto theft: sources

North Korean hacking group Lazarus is suspected to be behind a recent breach of about 45 billion won (US$30.6 million) in cryptocurrency from Upbit, South Korea’s largest crypto exchange, according to government and industry sources.

Authorities plan to conduct an on-site investigation at Upbit, which is operated by Dunamu, amid suspicions that Lazarus was responsible for the hacking, officials said.

Dunamu said that US$30.6 million in Solana-linked assets were transferred to an unauthorized wallet and said it will cover the full amount using assets the company owns.

A government official said it is possible hackers compromised or posed as administrator accounts, instead of attacking servers directly.

A security official noted that Lazarus often moves stolen cryptocurrency to other exchanges for money laundering, making transactions difficult to trace.
