Nokia said it signed a 5G expansion agreement with Taiwan Mobile on July 14 to upgrade the telecom company’s network with AirScale hardware and AI-driven software.

The company said the upgrade will improve network performance, automation, and energy efficiency while supporting new 5G services.

The deployment will include new baseband and radio equipment, and software for predictive hardware analytics, self-organizing network functions, traffic steering, and energy management.

Nokia said the upgrade would also add capacity and support features including network slicing and RedCap.

RedCap is a 5G feature for lower-power devices such as wearables, sensors, and trackers. Taiwan Mobile ranked second in 5G availability in an Opensignal report published in December 2025.

The agreement extends a relationship under which Nokia became the sole supplier of Taiwan Mobile’s 5G network in June 2020 under a three-year framework deal worth about 400 million euros (US$457 million).

The deal covered radio access network, core network, and IP Multimedia Subsystem equipment, after Nokia had earlier supplied Taiwan Mobile’s 2G, 3G, and 4G networks.
