Nissan taps UK AI startup Wayve for next-gen driving tech
Nissan has signed an agreement with UK-based autonomous driving startup Wayve to integrate AI-driven driver assistance technology into its next-generation ProPILOT series.
The collaboration will combine Wayve’s AI software with Nissan’s advanced driver-assistance systems, supporting both highway and urban driving.
A prototype featuring Wayve’s AI and Nissan’s sensor technology was unveiled in September 2025, demonstrating its use in various driving environments.
Nissan plans to equip its first production vehicle with the new system in Japan in fiscal year 2027, with deployment in other global markets to follow.
This is the first time an automaker has committed to deploying Wayve’s AI systems at scale across multiple vehicle segments.
Nissan expects real-world use of the system will help improve its intelligent driving technologies over time.

Nissan plans SAE Level 2 for FY27 Japan launch
- Next-generation ProPILOT remains Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Level 2 autonomous driving, meaning drivers must stay present and monitor the system at all times 1. This differs from higher levels where the car can drive on its own in some conditions.
