Nio delays Firefly EV launch in Europe to Q3 2025

Chinese EV manufacturer Nio has delayed the European launch of its Firefly EV to the third quarter of 2025. CEO William Li cited challenges in expanding sales and service networks in the region.

The Firefly brand, introduced in December 2024, was initially scheduled for launch in the first half of 2025. It is positioned as a competitor to Mercedes-Benz’s Smart and BMW’s Mini.

The firm plans to expand Firefly sales to 20 countries and regions outside of China.

Nio is now prioritizing partnerships with local companies to enhance its European presence.

Nio President Qin Lihong said that a right-hand drive version of the Firefly will be available by October. The company is also considering expansion into right-hand drive markets, including Southeast Asia and the United Kingdom.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Chinese EV makers face mounting EU regulatory challenges beyond tariffs

Nio’s delay in launching the Firefly EV in Europe highlights how Chinese manufacturers are struggling with more than just tariffs when entering the European market.

While the EU’s tariffs of up to 35.3% on Chinese EVs have received significant attention, the “sales and service network challenges” cited by Nio CEO William Li point to deeper structural barriers 1.

The EU market requires extensive local presence, with dealership networks, service centers, and charging infrastructure that Chinese manufacturers have limited experience establishing outside their home market.

Chinese EV makers like Nio are now actively pursuing local partnerships as a response, with the company specifically announcing it will sign deals with European partners to overcome these hurdles.

2️⃣ Premium EV competition intensifies as German brands reshape strategies

Nio’s Firefly brand was positioned to compete directly with BMW’s Mini and Mercedes-Benz’s Smart, entering a premium segment where German manufacturers are showing renewed strength.

BMW has achieved remarkable success in the EV space, selling 368,523 electric vehicles in 2024 – more than Audi and Mercedes combined – while capturing 16.7% of their total sales as EVs 2.

This competitive landscape has intensified since Nio first announced the Firefly, with BMW’s 32.4% growth in Q1 2025 EV sales demonstrating the established brands’ ability to leverage their existing customer base and dealer networks 3.
