Nintendo’s Pokemon Pokopia hits 2.2 million copies in 4 days

Nintendo said it sold more than 2.2 million copies of Pokemon Pokopia in the four days after launch, a performance that has helped offset concerns about momentum for the Switch 2.

Industry observers had worried the Switch 2 lacked high-profile games to drive sales and faced margin pressure from rising memory chip prices.

The new life-simulation spin-off has a Metacritic score of 89, and Atul Goyal, a Jefferies analyst, wrote in a client note that it was a “stealth hit” that could broaden the console’s appeal among non-gamers.

Nintendo previously attracted a broad audience with Animal Crossing: New Horizons during the COVID-19 pandemic.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Pokopia’s ‘stealth hit’ status is complicated by supply and retail availability

  • The game sold well worldwide, yet the launch ran into stock limits.
  • In the UK, it opened at number two on retail charts. The Game Business’ christopher dring wrote on social media that retailers were “seriously undersupplied” and sales were under half of what Pokémon Legends: Z-A sold 1.
  • Amazon listings also hinted at tight supply. The price for physical copies temporarily rose from $69.99 to $79.99 during shortages 2.
  • Reviews stayed strong. One report said it became the highest-rated Pokémon game in history 2.

A hit game intensifies Nintendo’s hardware cost and pricing dilemma

  • Pokopia’s popularity boosts interest in the Switch 2 while production costs climb.
  • A report cited TrendForce, a market research firm that tracks the electronics supply chain. It said Nintendo pays 41% more for the console’s RAM (random access memory) and over 8% more for storage, with AI demand tightening supply 3.
  • Nintendo has said per-unit profits on Switch 2 sales are lower than Switch 1, which could pressure earnings 3.
  • Nintendo faces two options. It can take the cost hit and accept slimmer margins, or raise the price and risk cooling sales momentum 3.
