Nintendo targets 25 million Switch 2 units by March 2026
Nintendo has asked suppliers to prepare up to 25 million Switch 2 consoles by March 2026, aiming for record first-year sales, according to sources cited by Bloomberg.
The Japanese gaming company began assembling the Switch 2 near the end of 2024 and could adjust production if demand fluctuates during the key holiday season.
Industry sources suggest Nintendo could ship about 20 million units in the current fiscal year, surpassing analysts’ estimates of 17.6 million.
The Switch 2 is priced at US$450 and remains compatible with the existing Switch game library.
Nintendo’s shares rose as much as 2.4% on October 17, following the news.
In the US, sales are reportedly running 77% ahead of the original 2017 Switch, based on Circana research.
Nintendo has prioritized maintaining high production to avoid the supply shortages seen by competitors during recent launches.

Implications, context, and why it matters.
Samsung’s 8nm keeps Switch 2 costs in check
- Nintendo picked Samsung’s 8nm process node (a generation of chip manufacturing) over a planned 5nm node to cut costs and keep supply steady 1. Nintendo targets up to 25 million units around 2026 2.
- The 8nm line avoids extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography and brings consistent yields, which lowers cost at scale 1.
- That choice leaves less room to grow as cloud gaming and AI hardware raise the bar 2. Nvidia’s Tegra T239 system-on-chip (SoC) is rated up to 4.3 trillion floating point operations per second (TFLOPs) with 1,536 CUDA (Compute Unified Device Architecture) cores 1.
- Samsung gets a shot at future console work against Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), while Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Sony are reportedly in talks for 3-nanometer (3nm) and 2-nanometer (2nm) projects 1.
