Nintendo stock pops on Pokémon Pokopia launch
Nintendo shares rose as much as 10% in their biggest jump since April, after the new Pokémon game Pokémon Pokopia, released exclusively for the Switch 2, and physical copies sold out at several major US retailers.
Analyst said in a note that Switch 2 momentum was surging because of the game’s viral success.
The stock rally eased some investor concern over rising memory chip costs, but shares remain almost 30% down from a November peak amid worries that higher memory prices fueled by AI demand could push up console costs.

The new Pokémon hit clashes with Nintendo’s hardware cost reality
- Investors are cheering a software win, yet Nintendo faces rising costs that strain its long-held approach of avoiding losses on hardware 1.
- AI-driven demand for semiconductors has lifted the estimated build cost of one Switch 2 to about $400, according to Toyo Securities analyst Hideki Yasuda 2.
- In Japan, a local analyst estimated the Japan-only, Japanese-language model sells for about $330 and may lose roughly ¥25,000, or about $160, per unit 2.

- Big releases like the new Pokémon title can quickly eat into the Switch 2’s 256GB of internal storage 3.
- One large download may use around 40% of onboard space. Bloomberg cited Final Fantasy VII Rebirth at about 102.5GB, which can push buyers toward external storage cards that cost more amid the chip shortage 3.
- Higher add-on spending appears to be reducing game buying per console. Bloomberg’s figures put the average at 3.88 games for the original Switch versus 2.18 for the Switch 2 at a similar sales point 3.
