Nintendo shares fall on concerns over higher Mideast shipping costs

Nintendo shares fell as much as 4.7% in Tokyo on March 2, hurt by fears after the world’s largest container carriers rerouted vessels away from the Suez Canal.

This followed US-Israeli strikes on Iran and threats by Houthi militants to attack cargo ships in the Red Sea.

Carriers are sending ships around the southern tip of Africa, a move estimated to add more than 10 days to deliveries.

Nintendo ships Switch 2 units from assembly hubs in Asia and relies heavily on sea freight for its US$450 console.

Hideki Yasuda, a Toyo Securities analyst, said investors worry that the Iran situation may raise freight costs and squeeze hardware margins in the technology sector.

Nintendos new console lands as the company tries to steady itself

  • Longer shipping routes could slow Switch 2 deliveries during launch. Nintendo expects to sell 19 million Switch 2 units in its first full fiscal year 1.
  • Nintendo needs fresh hardware sales after a weak year. Revenue fell 30.3%, while operating income dropped 46.6% in the prior fiscal year 2.
  • Some investors worry about higher freight bills and thinner hardware margins as container carriers avoid the Suez Canal. The detour adds more than 10 days to deliveries, and Nintendos gross margin slid from 59.1% to 37.4% during the initial Switch 2 sales period before any added rerouting costs 1.
  • Extra shipping costs could cut into profit from the product Nintendo is counting on to drive the next growth cycle.

Xbox leadership changes arrive while Nintendo deals with shipping strain

  • At the same time, a close competitor is going through a leadership shift.
  • Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer is retiring, effective Feb. 23, and xbox president Sarah Bond has decided to leave Microsoft, according to internal emails cited by IGN 3.
  • Microsoft Gaming will be led by Asha Sharma, president of Microsofts CoreAI product. Sharma has promised a return of Xbox with a renewed commitment to console hardware 3.
  • The combination of Nintendos shipping hurdles and Microsofts reset could reshape the competitive picture for Switch 2.
