Nintendo shares fall 10% on memory supply issues
Nintendo shares dropped over 10% on February 4, after the company reported quarterly revenue that fell short of market expectations, despite an 86% rise from the previous year.
The company posted a 24% rise in profit, driven by sales of its Nintendo Switch console, which is now its best-selling device since its launch in 2017.
However, Nintendo faces challenges from a global shortage of memory chips, a key component in its consoles, leading to rising costs.
Nintendo’s president, Shuntaro Furukawa, said that while the current impact on results is minimal, prolonged high component costs could affect profitability.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Nintendo’s stock drop does not match its recent results
- Investors focused on revenue coming in below expectations, yet the business still looks healthy.
- In the nine months through December, net profit rose 51.3% year on year to ¥358.9 billion ($2.3 billion). Revenue nearly doubled to ¥1.9 trillion 1.
- The Switch 2 drove much of that gain, with nearly 17.4 million units sold from April through December 1.
- Nintendo says it is keeping a close watch on the volatile memory market. It adds that earnings have not taken an immediate hit, backed by medium- to long-term procurement planning 2.
How AI demand could shape console prices
- Nintendo and outside observers link the memory squeeze to rising demand for AI hardware, including AI data centers (facilities packed with servers that run and train AI models) 1.
- That demand pits enterprise AI against consumer devices for the same chips. It also weakens the long-running pattern of consoles getting cheaper as parts costs fall.
- Analysts expect higher console prices could arrive this year 1.
- The pressure reaches beyond gaming. Companies shipping high-volume hardware such as smartphones or laptops now face the same competition from AI buyers for constrained components 1.
