Nintendo hits 3.5m Switch 2 sales in four days
Nintendo announced that it sold over 3.5 million units of the Switch 2 within the first four days of its release on June 5.
This makes the console the fastest-selling gaming device in the company’s history.
The Kyoto-based company previously projected sales of 15 million units for the Switch 2 during the current financial year, which ends in March 2026.
The new device features a larger screen and improved graphics compared to the original Switch, launched in 2017.
Nintendo has sold 152 million units of the original Switch, which became popular with titles such as “The Legend of Zelda” and “Animal Crossing: New Horizons.”

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Nintendo’s console strategy continues to defy industry expectations
The Switch 2’s impressive 3.5 million units sold in four days reflects Nintendo’s consistent ability to succeed with unconventional hardware approaches while competitors pursue cutting-edge technology.
This pattern repeats Nintendo’s historical success: the original Switch has now sold 152.12 million units, approaching the PlayStation 2’s all-time record of 155 million, despite being significantly less powerful than competitors’ hardware 12.
While Nintendo faces strong regional competition in markets like the UK, where the Switch 2 set records for a Nintendo launch but still trailed PlayStation and Xbox launches, their global strategy continues to deliver exceptional results 3.
The 15 million unit sales forecast for the fiscal year appears deliberately conservative given that the original Switch sold 28.8 million units during its peak year (2021), suggesting Nintendo is managing investor expectations while potentially positioning for outperformance 4.
Nintendo’s focus on unique hybrid functionality rather than raw processing power has consistently allowed it to carve out its own market segment rather than competing directly with PlayStation and Xbox for the same audience.
2️⃣ Gaming’s post-pandemic landscape reveals shifting market dynamics
The Switch 2 launches into a dramatically different market than its predecessor, which benefited enormously from pandemic-driven demand when titles like Animal Crossing: New Horizons sold 13.4 million units in just six weeks as lockdowns created unprecedented gaming engagement 5.
Overall gaming hardware spending has declined significantly, with US figures showing a 30% year-on-year drop as of May 2024, making the Switch 2’s strong launch particularly notable against this challenging backdrop 6.
