Nexperia welcomes US-China move to ease chip shipment barriers
Nexperia, a Dutch chipmaker, welcomed recent statements by the US and Chinese governments that have addressed barriers to its chip shipments.
The company said its current priority is maintaining stable supply for its customers.
Nexperia produces high-volume basic chips used in automotive manufacturing.
Ongoing disputes over Nexperia’s control have contributed to chip shortages that have impacted automakers worldwide.
The Dutch government said it remains in discussions with Chinese and other governments, as well as industry stakeholders, to find a constructive solution.
Nexperia did not comment on statements from its Chinese subsidiary about moving toward greater independence.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Regulatory relief stays unclear while shipments remain uncertain
- Nexperia welcomed statements from the U.S. and Chinese governments but has not said which export controls or licenses changed. That leaves the Guangdong, China final assembly and test site in limbo 1. The facility handles about 80% of final product capacity.
- China’s Ministry of Commerce said it will grant exemptions to exports that meet its criteria, but it did not spell out the rules 2. Reports of a pending U.S. update on shipments give no clarity on Wingtech Technology, Nexperia’s Chinese parent, or whether it remains on the U.S. Entity List (a trade blacklist that restricts exports to listed companies) or if temporary waivers apply 3.
- Talks by the Dutch government are still ongoing, and no full deal has emerged 3. With no clear framework, automakers face allocation risks (rationed supply across customers).
Distributors can benefit if lead times improve
- Automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and Tier 1 suppliers (direct suppliers to automakers) drained channel inventory for Nexperia parts in October 1. That left pent-up demand for metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs), diodes, and small-signal devices as factories tried to avoid line stoppages. If Guangdong restarts, authorized distributors and electronics manufacturing services (EMS) firms with alternative stock can take rushed reorders.
- Lead times (delivery times) for automotive-grade discretes (discrete semiconductors) stretched past 12 weeks in mid-October, with price gains of 5-20% 4. Those that lined up supply from ON Semiconductor, Infineon, or STMicroelectronics can sell premium allocations (sell limited supply at higher prices) before Nexperia volumes fully return.
