Nexperia China seeks new wafer suppliers as dispute drags on
Nexperia China is validating new domestic wafer suppliers within six months as a dispute with its Dutch parent continues.
The Dongguan plant has faced wafer shortages since the Netherlands head office halted shipments in late October over a payment disagreement.
Wingtech said the plant produced over 11 billion chips for more than 800 global clients since mid-October, a 14% drop from Nexperia’s previous annual output.
The Dongguan facility previously accounted for 70% of total production.
The dispute began after the Dutch government seized control of Nexperia in September, citing national security, and banned asset relocations for a year.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Nexperia China’s six-month plan hits automotive certification roadblocks
- The Dongguan facility handles assembly plus testing (backend packages then tests chips) for over 50 billion pieces a year 1. It is not a wafer fabrication plant, so the halt hits backend steps needing wafers from Nexperia’s fabs in Hamburg, Germany, and Manchester, UK 1.
- Automotive Electronics Council (AEC)-Q100/Q101 standards govern Nexperia’s automotive-qualified products 1 and require extensive reliability testing under automotive conditions, so a six-month domestic foundry (wafer manufacturing firm) qualification is tight.
- A 14% output drop signals reliance on 6-inch plus 8-inch (wafer diameter) TrenchMOS, a trench-based MOSFET (metal-oxide semiconductor field-effect transistor) power process, as well as bipolar processes used for many analog and power transistors 1. Chinese foundries may not match these quickly with automotive qualification, while Nexperia holds about 40% of basic chips like transistors and diodes 2.
Distributors and rivals can win automotive slots during Nexperia’s supply gap
- Stocks may last only several weeks 3. That lets rival discrete suppliers win design-ins (being selected in new or revised designs) at original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) like Volkswagen, Toyota, plus BMW and Mercedes-Benz 2.
- Electronics distributors should boost stocks of automotive-grade discrete parts from rivals because automakers face production halts 3 and long automotive qualification leaves a window until Nexperia restores supply via domestic foundries.
- Discrete manufacturers automotive-certified should step up outreach to tier-one suppliers (the direct, system-level suppliers to automakers) and stress European or US plants as stable options to Nexperia’s China-heavy assembly operations 1.
