New S Korean trade chief ramps up US talks before tariffs
South Korea’s new trade minister, Yeo Han-koo, announced plans to expedite trade negotiations with the United States.
This comes as the temporary suspension of US reciprocal tariffs is set to end on July 8.
Yeo emphasized the need for quick talks at the trade minister level and aims to build a long-term cooperation framework in trade, industry, and investment.
The trade ministry will expand its task force to better handle trade, industry, and energy issues.
The chief negotiator’s role will be upgraded to a first-class senior level.
Yeo, who helped renegotiate the Korea-US FTA in 2018, was appointed by President Lee Jae-myung to address the urgent trade challenges.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Korea’s strategic pattern of trade renegotiations shows resilience amid pressure
The current expedited negotiations represent South Korea’s third major trade adjustment with the US in just over a decade, demonstrating a pattern of adaptability under pressure.
The original KORUS FTA was negotiated from 2006-2007, implemented in 2012, and previously renegotiated in 2018 at the request of the Trump administration during his first term1.
Minister Yeo Han-koo’s experience is particularly valuable in this context, as he previously served during the 2018 renegotiations, giving him firsthand experience with the US trade approach1.
The original agreement eliminated 95% of tariffs on bilateral goods within five years and was the largest US trade deal since NAFTA, highlighting its economic significance for both nations1.
This history of successful renegotiations suggests South Korea has developed institutional expertise in navigating US trade demands while protecting its core economic interests.
2️⃣ Regional trade realignment emerges as strategic response to US tariffs
South Korea is pursuing a two-track approach to trade challenges, negotiating with the US while simultaneously strengthening regional partnerships as a hedge against uncertainty.
