New advisor joins Lightspeed India to guide AI startups

Lightspeed India has appointed Yvonne Wassenaar as an advisor, effective May 6, 2025. She will guide the firm’s enterprise software and AI startups across India, Southeast Asia, and the United States.

Wassenaar brings extensive executive experience from roles at VMware, New Relic, and Puppet. She has served on the boards of Alation, Braze, Arista Networks, JFrog, and Anaplan.

She previously worked with Lightspeed-backed companies like MuleSoft and Rubrik, helping guide Rubrik to its IPO.

This appointment follows the addition of Vivek Gambhir and Kevin Aluwi as venture partners, and Naina Lal Kidwai as a venture advisor earlier this year.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Venture capital firms increasingly rely on operator-advisors to navigate global complexities

Lightspeed’s decision to formalize its relationship with Yvonne Wassenaar highlights a growing trend in venture capital where firms are strategically adding experienced operators as advisors rather than just traditional investing partners.

This approach reflects the venture capital industry’s evolution beyond just providing capital to offering operational expertise through seasoned executives who bring practical leadership experience.

Lightspeed Venture Partners has approximately $25 billion in assets under management as of 2023, positioning it among the major global VC firms alongside Sequoia ($85B) and Andreessen Horowitz ($42B) 1.

The addition of Wassenaar—with her experience as VMware’s VP of strategy, New Relic’s CIO, and Puppet’s CEO—represents a strategic enhancement to Lightspeed’s ability to advise portfolio companies on operational challenges they face when scaling globally.

This practice of bringing executives with operational expertise into advisory roles has gained momentum as the complexity of building global businesses has increased, requiring more specialized guidance for founders beyond traditional investment advice.

2️⃣ India’s maturing startup ecosystem attracts specialized global venture investments

Lightspeed’s expansion of its advisory team in India comes amid significant growth in the region’s technology sector, with a notable uptick in tech IPOs in 2024 and continued momentum expected through 2025 2.

The firm has been systematically building its presence in the Indian market since 2008, culminating in a dedicated $500 million Lightspeed India Partners Fund IV in 2022 1.

This targeted investment approach reflects growing investor confidence in India’s startup ecosystem and recognizes the unique characteristics of the market that require specialized local expertise.
