Netflix raises prices across all streaming plans

Netflix lifts prices for all plans, including extra-member add-ons.

Netflix raised prices across its streaming tiers, with increases of at least US$1, marking its first hike since January 2025.

Its ad-supported plan now costs US$8.99 a month from US$7.99, the standard plan is US$19.99 from US$17.99, and the premium plan is US$26.99 from US$24.99.

Fees for adding a non-household member also rose to US$6.99 with ads from US$5.99, and US$9.99 ad-free from US$8.99.

Netflix has been spending more on content and newer formats such as live events and video podcasts, and it forecast 2026 revenue of US$50.7 billion to US$51.7 billion while saying ad revenue could roughly double year-on-year.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Price hikes follow Netflix’s password-sharing crackdown

  • Price hikes come after Netflix tightened password sharing through “paid sharing,” which charges for extra members outside a household; one writer called it “the most profitable software update” in modern entertainment 1.
  • The move read as a longer-term reset rather than a bump from one hit; in Q2 2022 Netflix still lost 970,000 subscribers even with record viewing for Stranger Things 1.
  • Antenna (a subscription analytics firm) recorded the four biggest U.S. sign-up days in four and a half years of tracking, beating the early COVID-19 lockdown surge 2.
  • Some analysts estimate US$2.5–US$3 billion in added annual revenue with little extra content spending, which could leave room for more increases 1.

Netflix’s pricing power and a shift away from subscriber metrics

  • The latest increase lifts monthly prices across tiers plus extra-member add-ons. It follows higher spending on content such as live events or video podcasts, alongside a 2026 revenue forecast of US$50.7 billion to US$51.7 billion. Netflix expects ad revenue to roughly double year on year.
  • One analysis estimated about US$10.23 in operating profit per subscriber per quarter, compared with about US$1.89 for Disney’s streaming division 1.
  • Ad-supported plans grew nearly 70% quarter on quarter by Q3 2023, alongside the “paid sharing” rollout 3.
  • Netflix told investors to track profit over membership growth, saying it will stop reporting subscriber numbers next year 4.
