Netflix debuts ad-free kids game Netflix Playground
Netflix launched Netflix Playground on Monday in the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, the Philippines, and New Zealand, offering games for children ages 8 and under based on characters such as Peppa Pig and Sesame Street as part of its wider gaming push.
The app is included in all Netflix plans, supports offline play, and has no ads, in-app purchases, or extra fees, the company said.
Netflix said it will roll out the app globally later this month as it tries to deepen engagement with families, as children’s content has traditionally been seen as helping reduce churn because parents are less likely to cancel subscriptions.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
The Playground app fits into a billion-dollar plan
- Playground sits within Netflix’s broader move into games and interactive formats. The company has put an estimated US$1 billion into this division since it began 1.
- Kids are a deliberate priority. Homes with children use 13.6 streaming services on average, compared with 8.2 in homes without kids 2.
- Younger audiences spend less time with traditional TV. In the US, people ages 15 to 44 watch less TV than older groups 1.
- Kids and family programming already makes up about 15% of viewing time on Netflix’s main service 2.
Netflix is building a self-contained entertainment ecosystem beyond a video library
- Bundling games with shows shifts Netflix from passive viewing to interactive play. It aims to win attention from apps, social feeds, and other screen time, not only rival streamers 3.
- This supports an intellectual property “flywheel.” A hit series can spawn games that keep fans engaged and open new revenue streams 3.
- The strategy accepts the “second screen” habit of using a phone or tablet while watching TV. Mobile devices become part of the Netflix experience 3.
- A tighter bundle can make subscriptions harder for families to drop. It also pushes Disney+ to expand beyond video-only “walled gardens” (closed, app-only content ecosystems) with its own interactive offerings 3.
