Neta Auto’s parent company seeks investors amid bankruptcy

Hozon Auto, the parent company of EV maker Neta Auto, is undergoing bankruptcy reorganization and has begun seeking new investors.

The Hangzhou Intermediate People’s Court accepted the bankruptcy restructuring case on June 12 and appointed a joint administrator to oversee the process. The administrator is now searching for investors to support a swift reorganization, aiming to revitalize the company and maximize its asset value. This comes as Neta Auto has faced significant financial challenges, including unpaid debts and halted production.

Hozon Auto’s assets include an industrial land parcel, production equipment, intellectual property like the “Neta Auto” trademark, and various manufacturing and assembly operations in China, Thailand, and Indonesia.

Despite halting production in November 2024, the company retains over 400 employees, including its management team and technical staff. Its production facilities remain operational, indicating potential for resumption of activities with adequate investment.

Investors must meet specific criteria, including financial stability and a clean legal record. Priority will be given to those who offer immediate funding and submit a detailed investment plan covering production resumption, employee arrangements, and operational strategies.

Earlier this year, there were rumors that Toyota was considering acquiring Neta Auto for its EV technology, but both companies denied these claims.

Reports earlier this year of Toyota considering an acquisition of Neta Auto were denied by both companies. Hozon Auto also faces significant financial pressure, evidenced by a renewed 2 billion yuan (US$275 million) equity freeze on its associated company.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Chinese EV market faces consolidation despite record growth

Neta Auto’s bankruptcy reorganization reflects a broader trend of consolidation in China’s EV market, despite the country’s impressive sales figures.

China dominated global EV adoption in 2024 with 11 million units sold (a 40% year-over-year increase), accounting for nearly two-thirds of all global EV sales 1.

However, this growth masks significant challenges for individual manufacturers, as many Chinese EV companies sell tens of thousands of vehicles but remain unprofitable 2.

The contrast between market growth and company struggles highlights the intense competition and overcapacity issues in China’s EV sector, where government subsidies have enabled rapid expansion but sustainable business models remain elusive.

Neta Auto’s situation exemplifies how even companies with substantial assets and manufacturing capabilities can struggle in this hypercompetitive environment.

2️⃣ Manufacturing assets retain strategic value despite financial troubles
