Nebius to build $10b AI data center in Finland
Nebius Group, an Amsterdam-based AI infrastructure firm, said it will add a 310-megawatt data center in Lappeenranta, Finland, a project it estimated at more than US$10.0 billion as demand for AI computing rises.
The company said Finnish developer Polarnode is already building the site, which would be Nebius’ 10th location, and is scheduled to come online in phases from 2027.
Nebius said the facility will be used to train AI models and run AI applications, will not be tied to a single customer, and it also said it has recently won work worth more than US$40.0 billion in total involving Microsoft and Meta.
The project would be Nebius’ largest outside the US, above its planned 240-megawatt site near Lille in France, and Nebius said it could eventually account for about 10% of its contracted capacity once completed..

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
The Finland data center fits a two-pronged growth strategy
- The Finland site will host many customers. Much of Nebius’s growth also comes from large contracts that mostly serve one client 1.
- CEO Arkady Volozh calls deals worth up to $27 billion with Meta and up to $19.4 billion with Microsoft “fuel” for building the company’s higher-margin multi-tenant AI cloud business 1.
- Those commitments lock in baseline revenue. They also support a goal of 2.5 gigawatts of contracted power by the end of 2026 2.
- The Finland project adds supply for the broader market rather than being reserved for a single buyer [News Article].
Nebius’s rise offers a new blueprint for competing in the AI infrastructure arms race
- Nebius is part of a growing group of specialist AI cloud providers challenging hyperscalers such as Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud 1, 3.
- Building data centers takes billions in capital. Long-term capacity commitments reduce the financing risk 1.
- Under the Meta agreement, Nebius plans to sell some capacity to third-party customers. Meta would purchase the rest, which clarifies demand and supports fundraising for further expansion 4.
- This approach supports a vertically integrated stack, spanning hardware and cloud services. Nebius can design its own hardware to cut costs while offering a multi-tenant cloud, a model other challengers could follow 1.
