US nears final approval on China AI investment restrictions

The United States regulations restricting some investments in AI in China are nearing approval.

These rules aim to prevent American expertise from aiding China’s military.

The regulations stem from an executive order signed by US President Joe Biden in August 2023.

They focus on managing US investments in AI, semiconductors, microelectronics, and quantum computing.

The US Office of Management and Budget is currently reviewing the rules, which usually happens just before their expected release in the next few weeks.

The measures will also require US investors to report specific investments in sensitive technologies to the Treasury Department.
