Pinterest founder joins $30m series A for AI-powered dictation app
Wispr Flow, a voice-based AI dictation app, has secured US$30 million in series A funding.
Menlo Ventures led the funding round, with participation from NEA, 8VC, and investors such as Pinterest founder Evan Sharp and Carta CEO Henry Ward.
Founded by Tanay Kothari, Wispr initially developed hardware for silent speech input but later transitioned to software.
The company released its Mac app in October 2024, followed by a Windows version in March 2025, and recently launched an iOS app.
The platform supports dictation in 104 languages, with 60% of users opting for non-English languages.
Wispr will use the funds to expand its team, build an Android app, strengthen enterprise features, and evolve into a task-managing AI assistant.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Voice AI is experiencing an investment surge driven by tangible business ROI
Wispr Flow’s $30 million funding is part of a broader trend that saw voice AI startups raising over $398 million in 2024 alone 1.
This investment surge is supported by evidence that voice AI delivers measurable returns, particularly in customer service where AI contact centers enable small businesses to compete with larger enterprises 2.
The rapid advancement of enabling technologies has significantly lowered barriers to entry, with improvements in model quality, reduced latency, and lower implementation costs creating fertile ground for startups 3.
Voice technology is now being applied across sectors including customer service, sales automation, and internal training, demonstrating versatility beyond simple dictation applications 3.
What makes this technology wave different from previous voice assistant iterations is the integration with generative AI, which helps overcome the historical limitations that kept earlier voice assistants restricted to basic functionalities 4.
2️⃣ The “VC-as-user” pattern emerges as a powerful funding catalyst
Both Wispr Flow and Granola secured significant funding after gaining traction specifically among venture capitalists who used their products daily, highlighting how investor personal experience increasingly drives investment decisions 5.
