Naver upgrades AI search engine with personalized summaries

Naver is rolling out AI-powered enhancements to its search engine, aiming to offer optimized and summarized results for users.

The South Korean tech firm has updated its search functions since August, especially for entertainment, sports, and gaming categories, now using AI to deliver more relevant and personalized content.

Users who search these topics and click on an event banner in search results through October 29 will be eligible for a random Naver Pay points reward, with participation limited to once per day.

Naver said its AI engine now interprets search intent and content freshness in real time, adjusting the order and layout of results.

Recently, the company began providing AI-generated summaries for search results, offering both brief and detailed overviews to help users find key information faster.

Naver has launched personalized AI recommendations in select categories, and is also testing keyword suggestion features based on user interests and search history.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Naver’s AI search revamp lacks clear impact metrics despite strong Q2 and Q3 earnings momentum

  • Naver’s Q2 net profit rose 50% to 497.4 billion won 1. Q3 revenue is projected at 3.04 trillion won, up 12% 2. The AI search updates still lack adoption data such as user penetration rates (the share of search users engaging with the new AI features) and revenue attribution to AI features 3. Measured lifts in click-through rate (CTR) or dwell time (time spent on a result) are also missing 3.
  • CEO Choi Soo-yeon said AI Briefing increased “business queries, user visits, and time spent online” in Q2 1. The August refresh for entertainment, sports, and games has no quantified impact on market share or on whether it offsets AI inference costs (the compute expense of running AI models) 3.
  • The planned 2026 “AI Tab” launch 1 and ongoing split testing (A/B testing) of keyword recommendations signal continued experiments 3. Search payoff remains unclear.

Publishers and SEO agencies can capture Naver traffic by tuning for AI ranking factors

  • Naver’s AI now reads search intent, content freshness, and user interests in real time to personalize feed-style results so creators can gain visibility by focusing on these factors beyond traditional keywords 3.
  • AI-generated summaries change placement 3. Publishers should structure content with clear takeaways and summary-friendly formats, and use examples from Google’s featured snippets (the highlighted answer box at the top of a results page) to guide layout for Naver’s AI blocks 3.
  • SEO tool makers and agencies can offer “Answer Engine Optimization for Naver” by mapping Naver Search Advisor guidance (Naver’s webmaster guidelines) on structured data, authority signals, freshness 3. Those rules guide recommendations in entertainment, sports, gaming 3.
