Naver, Spotify look to expand partnership in South Korea

Naver and Spotify held talks to review their partnership and discuss expanding collaboration in Korea.

The meeting was attended by Choi Soo-yeon, Naver CEO, and Alex Norstrom and Gustav Soderstrom, Spotify co-CEOs.

The partnership includes adding Spotify to Naver Plus Membership, enabling Spotify audio access through in-car navigation services, and letting users log into Spotify using Naver credentials.

Naver said Gen Z signups for its membership rose 17% after the partnership launch, and the firms plan to explore cooperation in search, marketing, and content.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

The partnership’s value comes from tight product links and a membership perk

  • NAVER Plus Membership costs 4,900 KRW per month. Members who pick Spotify Premium Basic as their standard digital content benefit get it for no extra charge, even though Premium Basic costs 7,900 KRW per month on Spotify’s app, excluding VAT 1.
  • Spotify features now sit inside Naver across search, maps, and Naver Plus Membership, which goes beyond a simple bundle 2.
  • Music previews appear in Naver search results. Spotify also plays inside Naver Maps, and single sign-on (SSO), a login method that lets people use one set of credentials across services, lets users sign in to Spotify with a Naver ID 2.
  • Spotify uses this integration to strengthen its position in South Korea’s streaming market, where Melon and Genie lead 3.

This move reshapes super-app bundles and offers a path for global firms

  • Naver pushes an all-in-one app approach by adding Spotify Premium Basic as a membership content benefit. It previously removed VIBE, Naver’s own music streaming service, from membership benefits in September 2023 1.
  • Global services like Spotify can use the same playbook in markets where local apps dominate 3.
  • The tie-up can cut customer acquisition pressure by tapping Naver’s existing audience and its daily-use surfaces such as search and maps 2.
