Korean Aerospace Industries Co. (KAI) said on July 7 it would work with Naver Corp. and Naver Cloud to develop a defense AI (AI) foundation model.

The companies signed a memorandum of understanding at KAI’s headquarters in Sacheon on July 6.

The companies said they would combine Naver’s AI and cloud technologies with KAI’s aerospace expertise and defense system integration capabilities to build a model for defense applications.

These include autonomous flight and mission execution technologies for unmanned aerial vehicles, as well as an AI platform for next-generation combat systems.

The project builds on KAI’s unmanned aircraft business, which deployed its Songolmae reconnaissance unmanned aerial vehicle with the South Korean army in 2001.

Since then, KAI has expanded its research into autonomous vertical take-off and landing aircraft, strike unmanned aerial vehicles, and unmanned combat aerial vehicles.

For Naver, the deal extends its sovereign AI efforts.

Naver Cloud said it could assure data sovereignty and listed 17 compliance certifications and attestations.
