Naver is facing potential copyright lawsuits from South Korean media companies over the use of news content in its AI projects.

Rep. Choi Soo-jin of the People Power Party said Korea’s three major broadcasters are seeking 200 million won (US$140,000) each from Naver and its affiliate Naver Cloud for using news articles without authorization to train AI models.

Choi noted that total claims could rise, with initial damages already exceeding 500 million won (US$350,858).

The Korean Association of Newspapers also filed a complaint with the Fair Trade Commission in April, accusing Naver of copyright infringement for using news content without permission.

Naver has acknowledged using news data for its HyperCLOVA large language model but had not obtained permission.

The Fair Trade Commission’s decision could lead to further lawsuits from individual media firms.
