Naver Cloud launches first Korean-focused AI models
Naver Cloud has introduced its first open-source AI model, HyperClova X Seed, for commercial use.
The HyperClova X Seed series includes three models: Seed 3B, Seed 1.5B, and Seed 0.5B.
The Seed 3B model can perform vision-language tasks, allowing it to analyze text, images, and videos.
Seed 1.5B is focused on text generation and translation.
Meanwhile, Seed 0.5B is intended for conversational interfaces in Korean, making it suitable for mobile and smart home devices.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ South Korea’s sovereign AI strategy comes amid rising geopolitical tech tensions
Naver’s emphasis on “sovereign AI” mirrors South Korea’s broader national strategy that began in 2019, when the government launched an initiative to position Korea as a global AI leader by 2030 with a commitment to develop 100 action tasks across AI ecosystem development 1.
This push has gained urgency as global AI competition has expanded beyond just the US and China, with South Korea initially pledging $2 billion investment in AI capabilities by 2022 to enhance its position 2.
The emphasis on locally-developed models directly addresses the risk that AI monopolies can lead to cultural assimilation, with Naver’s HyperCLOVA X model specifically trained with 6,500 times more Korean data than GPT-4 to ensure Korean cultural context and social norms are properly represented 3.
This approach is particularly significant as countries increasingly view AI capabilities as essential to national security, economic independence, and cultural identity preservation rather than just technological advancement 4.
2️⃣ Lightweight AI models represent a pragmatic strategy for market adoption
Naver’s focus on smaller, specialized AI models (0.5B, 1.5B, and 3B parameter versions) aligns with a growing industry trend where lightweight models are gaining traction for their practicality and efficiency.
According to research firm Gartner, by 2027, enterprises are projected to utilize small language models (SLMs) at least three times more frequently than large language models (LLMs) due to their cost advantages and specialized capabilities 5.
This approach addresses the exact challenge mentioned by Sung Na-ko in the article: “Even if we want to transform all services to ChatGPT-level models, realistically, the operational costs are too high to bear,” reflecting the real-world constraints that businesses face when implementing AI.
