Myntra launches in Singapore

Bengaluru-based ecommerce platform Myntra has launched in Singapore, as it seeks to bring Indian fashion to the city-state.

The platform will showcase around 35,000 styles from 100 Indian brands.

Available categories include apparel, footwear, home products, and accessories.

The Singapore launch represents Myntra’s first direct international expansion after nearly 18 years of operation in India.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Diaspora-first strategy creates safer international expansion pathway

Myntra’s approach of targeting the 650K Indian diaspora in Singapore follows a proven expansion blueprint used by many successful e-commerce companies.

The company is entering the market with a highly focused offering of 100 Indian fashion brands and 35,000 styles specifically designed to appeal to expatriates seeking culturally resonant products from their homeland 1.

This strategy reduces market research costs and minimizes cultural adaptation challenges compared to targeting the general Singaporean population, as Myntra already understands its target customers’ preferences.

This approach leverages Myntra’s existing strength, with 30,000 Singapore-based users already visiting its Indian platform monthly, indicating pre-existing demand without any marketing investment 1.

The diaspora-first approach provides a foundation for potential broader expansion, as success with the initial target audience can create brand awareness among the wider Singapore market.

2️⃣ International expansion follows domestic financial maturation

Myntra’s global expansion coincides with its first-ever profitability achievement in FY24, posting a net profit of ₹30.9 crore after years of consistent losses, including a substantial ₹782.4 crore loss in the previous fiscal year 2.

This pattern mirrors the classical business development trajectory where companies typically internationalize only after establishing a stable financial foundation in their home market.

The timing suggests a strategic decision to leverage newfound financial stability for expansion, with revenue growth of 15% to ₹5,122 crore providing the necessary resources to absorb the initial costs associated with international operations 2.
